Local transport

BKV transport
The capital's local public transport company is the BKV (Budapest Transport Company), which is one of the world's greatest public transport systems. You can reach every destination within the city via metro, bus, tram, or trolleybus.

In Hungary Budapest is the only city where metro lines are operating: three metro lines are available: M1 or yellow line, which was the first underground built in the continent, running through Liget, and Andrássy street till Deák square. Deák square is the meeting point of the three lines, so one can change M2 or M3 here. M2 or red line is running from Déli railway station from Buda side to Örs vezér square on Pest side. M3 or blue line crosses Pest from the north, Újpest to the south, Kõbánya.

The metro runs from 4.30 to 23.10. The transport is provided after midnight on the lines of metro and some day buses and trams when night buses run. "É" and a number mark these night buses.

If you would like to take a visit to the outskirts of the capital the best way is to take HÉV, which is a suburban train between Budapest and Szentendre. Two other lines are running from Budapest to Csepel sziget and to Gödöllõ.

For using the public transport vehicle you have to buy a ticket or a season pass or a Budapest Card. Budapest Card offers three days of unlimited public transportation in Budapest. Passes and card can be bought only at ticket offices while tickets are available at kiosks.

About the schedule, the services and the types of tickets and passes you can get more information here.

Taxi companies
If you are in a hurry or would like to travel comfortably for an evening program or a business meeting, you can call different taxi companies, which send a car wherever and pick you up in 5-10 minutes.

The rates of taxis in the city differ by companies, which are usually posted inside the cab, so you can check it after getting in. Generally private cabs have higher rates. If you call a taxi on the phone, it is much cheaper than if you take one on the street. In Hungary it is a custom to give some tip to the driver, which is around 10 per cent of the final amount.
