Briefly about Hungary

Hungary and the EU

On 1 May 2004 Hungary joined the European Union. It means that Hungary like other member states fall under the communal rules and due to harmonization many Hungarian rules went through essential changes. These changes concerns to more aspects of life of expatriates and his/her family, like work permit, residence permit, visa policy, tax policy, social and health insurance, education etc. According to the principle of prohibition of EU citizens discrimination in some respects Hungarians and EU-citizens enjoy the same rights. For example the various types of social provisions - except social aids - can be claimed by EU-citizens under the same condition as Hungarians. At the same time in respect of labour market Hungary employ the principle of reciprocity. It means that work permit is given automatically only to those EU-citizens, which state ensure free employment for Hungarians and vica versus. Regarding travelling the EU-citizens can enter Hungary without passport but with identity card, while the citizens of third countries need passport and in certain cases visas as well. The administrative control along the common border of Hungary and other EU-states is more simple than before 1 May the EU and non-EU citizens are controlled separately.
